Seventy-six percent of educators see the need for motor club membership, but only 40 percent belong to a club, according to a recent survey by Horace Mann Educators Corporation (NYSE:HMN) .
In response to this significant market interest and potential, the company today introduced the Auto Plan, a motor club program providing roadside assistance and other emergency, convenience and discount services that enhance basic auto insurance coverage. Horace Mann's provider of services in this venture is Cross Country Motor Club, one of the oldest and most respected motor clubs in the nation.
"Our customers expressed a desire for a motor club product providing additional security, peace of mind, and value," said Doug Reynolds, executive vice president, insurance operations. "Because we're committed to being the education community's company of choice, we delivered."
While Horace Mann serves educators primarily, the Auto Plan is available to individuals who are not educators as well. Program buyers have two options. Auto Plan Plus One ($54.95/year) covers the motor club member plus one other driver. Auto Plan Plus Family ($84.95/year) covers the member plus all other household drivers up to age 22, even those away at college.
Over 80 percent of the educators surveyed said they were primarily interested in a motor club plan because of its 24-hour roadside assistance feature. As a result, Horace Mann is offering a plan that provides comprehensive roadside assistance benefits.
"Plus One provides a tow to the nearest facility, and Plus Family to a garage or repair shop of choice within 100 miles," says Cathleen Sweeten, Horace Mann's director of business development and analysis. "This means no-cash outlay for the customer which is a great benefit when compared to some motor clubs that impose a dollar or short-range mileage limit on the tow, leaving the customer to cover any charges that exceed the limit. Also, Plus Family provides $20 in gas coupons to new members."
Both plans offer 24/7 features including:
-- Road service and repair assistance, up to four occurrences per year.
-- Towing and emergency services, including battery boost, tire repair, winching, fuel delivery and key lockout.
-- Emergency message service and computerized lost key retrieval.
-- Computerized trip routing and map services.
-- Bond and legal defense reimbursement.
-- Discounts on travel-related services (car rental and lodging), as wel as on dining, entertainment and retail services.
Horace Mann's partner, Cross Country Motor Club, handles all customer service inquiries, questions and concerns. Cross Country has more than 20,000 qualified mechanics, tow trucks and service stations in their nationwide network, enabling roadside assistance to arrive within 30 to 45 minutes, on average.
The program is currently offered in 24 states, with plans to expand nationwide soon. The states where the program is offered today include Alaska, Arizona, Colorado, Connecticut, Florida, Georgia, Iowa, Idaho, Illinois, Indiana, Maine, Michigan, Ohio, North Dakota, Missouri, Minnesota, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, South Dakota, Vermont, Washington, Wisconsin, and West Virginia.

Publication's June Issue Marks the 35th Anniversary of the BE 100s Report Chronicling the Growth of U.S. Black Business
BLACK ENTERPRISE (BE) today announced the nation's top-grossing black-owned businesses as listed in the publication's 35th annual BE 100s report. The cornerstone of the publication's June issue, this comprehensive analysis includes a total of 275 businesses: 100 industrial/service companies, 100 auto dealerships, 60 financial services firms, and 15 advertising agencies.
When BE first compiled its top 100 in 1973, combined sales for the 100 component companies totaled $473 million. Today, the top 100 African American industrial/service companies and 100 leading auto dealers -- the core of the BE 100s report -- collectively grossed more than $27 billion. As the BE 100s list marks its 35th anniversary, the nation's most profitable black-owned businesses collectively responded to a more challenging and competitive business environment by aggressively working toward the expansion of revenue base and markets. Companies that found success did this by implementing a new blueprint for growth, including recruiting powerhouse management teams, forming strategic partnerships, strengthening their black business networks, and developing a global focus.
As a result, several companies reached new milestones. World Wide Technology Inc., No. 1 on the BE INDUSTRIAL/SERVICE 100 list, continues its prominence as the nation's top-grossing black-owned business. This year the Maryland Heights, Missouri-based reseller of IT products and services becomes the first company to surpass the $2 billion sales mark since TLC Beatrice International Holdings Inc. did so in 1996. In addition, two other companies exceeded $1 billion in revenues. CAMAC International Corp., a Houston-based crude oil, gas exploration, and production and trading company reported sales of $1.6 billion. CAMAC ranks No. 2 on the BE INDUSTRIAL SERVICE 100 for the fourth consecutive year. Led by CEO Gregory Jackson, Prestige Automotive reported total sales $1.5 billon, making it No. 1 on the BE AUTO DEALERS 100. Located in St. Clair Shores, Michigan, Prestige continues to thrive despite Detroit's downturn, posting outstanding sales of Ford, Lincoln, Mercury, GM, Saturn, and Mercedes-Benz vehicles.
BE 100s companies tied closely to the automotive market had perhaps the most difficult year. Shifts in consumer demands away from sport utility vehicles sent U.S. automakers reeling along with their contractors. Faring somewhat better were companies in the quick-serve restaurant industry. While S&P's fundamental outlook remained neutral at the end of March, the firm expects consumers to continue dining out as a result of a higher percentage of Americans working, particularly women.
Top-grossing companies on additional BE 100s lists include the following:
BE ADVERTISING AGENCY GlobalHue, Southfield, MI
$550 million in billings
BE BANK Carver Federal Savings Bank, New York, NY
$765 million in assets
BE INVESTMENT BANK The Williams Capital Group L.P., New York, NY
$142 billion in total managed issues
BE ASSET MANAGER EARNEST Partners, Atlanta, GA
$26 billion in assets under management
BE PRIVATE EQUITY FIRM Fairview Capital Partners Inc., Farmington, CT
$2.4 billion in capital under management
In developing the rankings for 2007, BE research collected surveys from hundreds of companies as well as information from government agencies, professional organizations, industry associations, business information services, entrepreneurs, and corporations. The information included total revenues for calendar year 2006; a detailed description of business activities; historical ownership data; and confirmation that the entity is at least 51% black-owned, or that blacks own at least 51% of the controlling shares if the company is publicly traded.
The June 2007 issue of BLACK ENTERPRISE -- with complete BE 100s rankings, full eligibility criteria, and company overviews -- is on newsstands today.

GMAC Insurance Reduces Rates in Ohio
The Company that Cares Gives Buckeye State Customers a Much-Needed Break
Today, GMAC Insurance announced the company will reduce its auto insurance rates in Ohio, effective immediately. Drivers in the Buckeye State can expect to save an average of 10.22 percent when purchasing GMAC Insurance coverage from 246 Ohio-based independent agencies. With fuel prices surging, these rate decreases will help customers manage their transportation costs, giving them a much-needed break. What's more, GMAC Insurance's exclusive GM Loyalty Discount has increased, which means policies with only GM vehicles now get up to 15% off liability coverage.
"With lower claims costs and favorable market conditions, we have reduced the rates that our independent agents offer," said Scott Murphy, vice president of product and pricing, GMAC Insurance -- Personal Lines. "Given our long-term commitment to our customers and agents in Ohio, we believe this is the right thing to do for both new and existing customers. And, we'll still take care of them with the same great benefits, such as our outstanding 24/7 claims service, emergency expense allowance, SmartParts guarantee and SmartReplacement program."
The GMAC Insurance rate reduction is a statewide average that will affect individual customers differently. Overall premium changes for individual motorists will vary depending on factors such as the coverages they carry, the discounts for which they qualify, where they live, the kind of car insured, who drives it and how much it is driven.
"We know that many customers prefer to buy their auto insurance with the help of an independent agent, so we want to allow our agents to provide the best possible value to their customers," said Murphy. "With our statewide rate decrease, Ohio customers will be able to get great rates and great coverage with one of the top insurers in the nation."
For more information about GMAC Insurance coverage and to find a local independent agent, call 877-468-3466 or go to www.gmacinsurance.com
The GMAC Insurance Group is one of the largest automobile insurers in the United States and is a wholly owned subsidiary of GMAC Financial Services. GMAC Insurance Personal Lines offers a variety of property and casualty products, including personal auto, RV, motorcycle, boat and commercial auto insurance. With a nationwide network of claims professionals, local independent agents and a 24-hour, toll-free claims hotline available 365 days a year, GMAC Insurance provides superior claims service for its customers.

Motorists traveling on Memorial Day weekend can't do much about the high price of gas, but they can pay less at the pump by making sure their vehicles get maximum fuel economy. According to the Car Care Council, fuel economy is directly related to vehicle care and driver behavior and both can have a significant impact on how much motorists pay at the pump.
Under-inflated tires can impact the vehicle's fuel economy. When tires aren't inflated properly, it's similar to driving with the parking brake on and can cost a mile or two per gallon.
Dirty air filters can also waste gas and cause the engine to lose power. An air filter that is clogged with dirt, dust and bugs chokes off the air and creates a "rich" mixture, which is too much gas being burned for the amount of air. Replacing a clogged air filter can improve gas mileage by as much as 10 percent, saving about 15 cents per gallon.
Worn or dirty spark plugs can cause misfiring, which wastes fuel. Vehicles can have four, six or eight spark plugs that fire as many as three million times every 1,000 miles, resulting in a lot of heat and electrical and chemical erosion. Spark plugs that are replaced per the owner's manual will lead to a better performing vehicle.
Vehicle gas caps that are damaged, loose or missing altogether waste gas. According to the council, about 17 percent of the vehicles on the road have gas cap problems, causing 147 million gallons of gas to vaporize every year.
"When gas prices soar, many motorists hunker down and don't take proper care of their vehicles," said Rich White, executive director, Car Care Council. "What they don't realize is that they can save at the pump by simply checking the tires, air filters, spark plugs and vehicle gas caps. These items can make a significant difference in the vehicle's fuel economy and it takes very little time and money to check them."
When it comes to driver behavior, the council reminds motorists that aggressive driving can lower gas mileage by as much as 33 percent on the highway and 5 percent on city streets, resulting in seven to 49 cents per gallon.
Staying within the speed limit also improves fuel economy. Gas mileage decreases rapidly at speeds above 60 miles per hour (mph) and each mph driven over 60 will result in an additional 10 cents per gallon.
Excessive idling wastes gas and is unnecessary. A vehicle needs only one or two minutes to warm up. Motorists should also avoid jackrabbit starts and hard stopping, both that make a car less fuel-efficient. Gradually stepping on the gas and gently applying the brakes will improve fuel efficiency.
Although traveling usually involves carrying luggage, motorists should try to limit any extra weight or unneeded items in the trunk. An extra 100 pounds can cut fuel efficiency by 1 or 2 percent.
The Car Care Council is the source of information for the "Be Car Care Aware" consumer education campaign promoting the benefits of regular vehicle care, maintenance and repair to consumers.

As the price of gas continues to reach record highs, more car shoppers are making fuel efficiency a top priority. While gas mileage typically takes center stage, combining the sticker price of a car with its predicted lifetime fuel cost can offer consumers a guide to their overall savings during the lifetime of a car.
"Hybrid cars get a lot of attention when gas prices start to rise. They certainly can save money at the pump and are typically better for the environment," said Patrick Olsen, Cars.com managing editor. "However, not everyone can afford to own a hybrid, and some consumers have needs that are not met by hybrids. If your primary goal is to save money, there may be better options."
Cars.com looks at the top 10 cars in various vehicle segments that deliver the best bang for the buck based on vehicle price and average lifetime fuel costs. The Toyota Yaris tops the list with a base price slightly more than $11,000 for a two-door hatchback and average fuel economy of 34 mpg in the city and 40 mpg on the highway.
The list was compiled by combining the base sticker price with a fuel cost estimate based on the car's estimated gas mileage. Fuel cost estimates assume the car will be driven 15,000 miles per year, with 45 percent of those miles on the highway and 55 percent on city streets. The cost of regular unleaded gasoline in the estimate is $3.13 per gallon, and it assumes the car is owned for eight years. Premium fuel costs are estimated at $3.44 per gallon.

As the weather heats up, many people are finalizing their plans for a summer vacation. While deciding on a destination and a place to stay comes first, CarMax technicians would argue that if you plan to drive, getting your vehicle ready for vacation is the most important aspect of your trip preparation. CarMax, Inc. (NYSE:KMX) , the nation's largest retailer of used cars, has expert advice on how to make sure your car is as ready as you are for your next vacation.
"Following your maintenance schedule can prevent your vacation from becoming a mechanical nightmare, particularly if a breakdown could have been prevented," says Juan Crespo, ASE Master Technician for CarMax. "Take your car to a certified automotive technician for a full safety inspection at least one week before you plan to leave for vacation. If a problem is discovered, this allows enough time to have it fixed."
1. The certified automotive technician should check the following during this inspection:
- Fluid levels, including engine oil, transmission fluid, radiator fluid, power steering fluid, brake fluid, and windshield washer fluid
- Tire pressure and tire tread depth and condition (Also, have the spare tire pressure checked)
- Brakes
- Belts and hoses
- Windshield wipers
- Lights
- Air conditioning operation
Your kit should include:
- Flashlights and flares
- Jumper cables
- Tire inflator
- Extra fluids (oil, coolant, transmission)
- A First Aid kit
- A jack (make sure that the vehicle jack is operational and all the tools are present)
- Gloves
- Rags/paper towels
- Water
- Blanket
- Multipurpose tools (commonly containing pliers, wire cutters, a knife, a saw, a bottle opener, screwdriver, file, and an awl)
4. Following posted highway speed limits will increase your car's fuel efficiency because gas mileage declines by a few percent for each 5 MPH increase in speed above 45 MPH.
5. Finally, buckle up, slow down, and have fun!
Ensure Safe Driving During Heavy Travel Season; Jiffy Lube Service Centers Offer Free 'Summer Special' Tire Pressure Check
Summer is around the corner and Southland drivers are gearing up for their annual road trips. But it seems gearing up has more to do with washing and waxing than checking tires and changing oil.
A recent poll of more than 500 Los Angeles, Ventura, Orange, Riverside and San Bernardino county drivers shows they may not be prepared to make the long haul. Nearly 95% said they're concerned with their car's appearance but only 20% pay attention to vehicle maintenance. Even though car washes and garages seem equally prevalent, 85% of the people surveyed wash their vehicles every two months while less than half check for tire pressure as often. In fact, 25% check it three times a year or less.
The survey also found that almost half of the drivers didn't know whether their battery required maintenance or fluid. A dead battery is a surefire way to ruin a road trip.
Jiffy Lube, a nationwide car care service provider, is helping Southern Californians summer-proof their vehicles by offering a free tire pressure check at local Jiffy Lube service centers.
"We were surprised with the results of this survey," said John Kenyon, President of the Southern Californian Jiffy Lube group of franchises. "Nearly everyone indicated that maintenance tasks like oil changes and battery checks are a high priority, but a large percentage of them didn't actually carry them out on a recommended basis. We're hoping people will come in to our service centers and have their cars inspected so everyone can enjoy a safer summer travel season."
According to the Society of Automotive Engineers, low tire pressure is the cause of approximately 260,000 accidents each year. All major tire manufacturers recommend monthly pressure checks and one right before going on a long trip or when outside temperature changes significantly.
Jiffy Lube also suggests the following tire maintenance tips:
* Check tire pressure when the temperature is low and before driving a mile. If driving over a mile, measure and record the under-inflation amount for each tire before driving
* Upon arriving at a service station, measure each tire's inflation again and, if pressure has increased, adjust the amount of additional air pressure needed. For example, if cold pressure should be 35 per square inch (psi) but started off at 28 psi, and current pressure is 33 psi, warm tires should be inflated to 40 psi. Recheck when cold
Proper auto care can also help save money. The Department of Transportation found that properly inflated tires can save about 5 cents per gallon in gasoline. With California having the highest national average at $3.478 a gallon for self-serve unleaded, drivers should make sure to check their tires when filling up at the station.
To save additional money on gas, drivers should:
* Throw out junk - The Department of Energy estimates that drivers can save anywhere between 3 and 6 cents a gallon (based on $2.97 a gallon) just by removing excess weight from the car and trunk
* Learn to "Cruise" - Cruise control at highway speeds, especially on long trips, can offer an average fuel savings of 7 percent
* Don't idle - Sitting gets no miles per gallon
* Respect the law - Speeding, rapid starts and stops will all waste precious gasoline. Being a sensible and safe driver can help save anywhere between 15 and 98 cents a gallon (based on $2.97 a gallon)
* Follow the schedule - Drivers should refer to their owner's manual for maintenance information, e.g. tune-ups, oil changes, etc.
* Unclog filters - Whether it's air or fuel, cleaning can optimize fuel efficiency
* Renew the spark - Plug, that is. Worn ones cause inefficient combustion and wasted fuel
* Tighten gas caps - Keeping it loose will evaporate fuel

Inflate Your Way to Fuel Savings This Memorial Day
Sky-high gasoline prices will boost the cost of a long weekend road trip this Memorial Day but a simple step can help reduce gas pump sticker shock -- properly checking your tire pressure.
Under inflated tires can cost drivers an additional nine cents per gallon of gas. Properly inflated tires can save you money on gas and vehicle maintenance and promotes safety, too. The Rubber Manufacturers Association (RMA), which represents tire manufacturers, recommends checking tire pressure every month and before long trips.
"Checking tire pressure is simple and takes just five minutes," said Dan Zielinski, RMA vice president, communications. "Motorists will get better fuel economy, their tires will last longer and you'll help maximize your vehicle's safety."
Memorial Day is the start of the so-called "101 Deadliest Days of Summer" when highway fatalities increase as more people hit the road for summer vacations and road trips. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration estimates that crashes attributed to under inflated tires cause 660 fatalities and 33,000 injuries every year.
A 2007 RMA survey found that too many motorists fail to pay attention to their tires.
- Only 55 percent of drivers say they have checked tire pressure within the past month compared to 70 percent last year.
- Nearly seven in ten drivers wash their vehicle every month but barely more than half check tire pressure monthly.
- 45 percent of drivers wrongly believe that the correct inflation pressure is printed on the tire sidewall. (Check for a sticker on the driver's door or look in the vehicle owner's manual.)
- 26 percent of drivers wrongly believe that the best time to check their tires is when they are warm after being driven for at least a few miles. (Check before driving when tires are cold.)

Shoppers Choose Best New 2007 Road Trip Vehicles on kbb.com
With Memorial Day officially kicking off the summer driving season, a record numbers of travelers will be hitting the road this year. According to AAA, approximately 38.3 million people are expected to travel during the holiday weekend, making it the busiest travel weekend in U.S. history. As a result, the road test editors of Kelley Blue Book's kbb.com chose 10 new vehicles well-suited for road trips and then asked shoppers which of these vehicles they would most like to take on the road this summer (The results have been tallied and consumer rankings are listed in the chart below).
This year's top spots are taken by two convertibles, two sedans and one SUV -- Jaguar's latest performance-oriented coupe, the XKR Convertible; BMW's newest drop top, the 3-Series Convertible; family-hauling and towing favorite Chevrolet Suburban; Dodge's performance sedan, the Charger SRT8; and Mercedes-Benz's E320 BLUETEC featuring the latest state-of-the-art clean diesel technology.
"In choosing our list, we wanted to include a vehicle for every journey -- from weekend jaunts of one or two people, to week-long escapades that involve one or two entire families and maybe a dog and a boat," said Jack R. Nerad, executive editorial director and executive market analyst for Kelley Blue Book and kbb.com. "Our selection criteria included all the tangible and intangible need-to-have attributes such as driving enjoyment, passenger comfort, fuel economy and cargo space."
Kbb.com's 10 Best New Road Trip Vehicles for 2007
Rank Vehicle
1 Jaguar XKR Convertible
2 BMW 3-Series Convertible
3 Chevrolet Suburban
4 Dodge Charger SRT8
5 Mercedes-Benz E320 BLUETEC(R)
6 GMC Acadia
7 Land Rover LR3
8 Ford Edge
9 MINI Cooper
10 Mazda MX-5 Miata Convertible Hardtop
Kelley Blue Book's "Best Road Trip Vehicle" survey was administered by Kelley Blue Book Marketing Research via the Internet on kbb.com to more than 700 participants on April 20-27, 2007.
Kbb.com Editors' Comments on Each Vehicle:
Jaguar XKR Convertible -- When your itinerary includes a stop at the kind of ritzy resort in which a highly desirable Jaguar XK Convertible merely blends into the scenery, you can one-up the other guests by opting for the sportier and more exclusive XKR Convertible. The same sexy sheetmetal found on the XK is adorned with sportier accoutrements that reflect the 420-horsepower supercharged V8 and livelier suspension underneath.
BMW 3-Series Convertible -- With a retractable hardtop and available twin-turbo engine -- two big firsts in the celebrated history of the 3 Series -- BMW's newest drop top is better suited than ever for the varying demands of a long journey. The turbo engine generates 300 horsepower, the roof retracts in 22 seconds and the whole thing screams "long weekend."
Chevrolet Suburban -- For really big road trips, the strapping Suburban is the hauler of choice. Load it up with nine people, and Chevy's family-style workhorse still has room for 45.8 cubic feet of gear. Combine that kind of space with a maximum towing capacity of 9,700 pounds and you've got a vehicle that can do the work of three.
Dodge Charger SRT8 -- An eye-catching 425-horsepower muscle car that's also a comfortable long-haul sedan, the Dodge Charger SRT8 is a road trip car that everyone can agree on. The kicker is the available rear-seat DVD entertainment system -- an invaluable companion on family road trips and a feature not offered on most sedans.
Mercedes-Benz E320 Bluetec -- How do you top a German touring sedan for traveling long distances in style and comfort? The answer: a German touring sedan that returns 35 mpg, that's how. The E320 Bluetec is powered by a state-of-the-art clean diesel powerplant that produces prodigious amounts of torque without the shake, rattle, emissions and smell that characterized last century's diesels.
GMC Acadia -- A three-row troop transport that's more stylish than a minivan and more efficient than a full-size SUV, the GMC Acadia is attractive and comfortable inside and has excellent road manners to boot. Along with its cousins -- the Saturn Outlook, forthcoming Buick Enclave and a yet unnamed Chevrolet version -- we expect the Acadia to become a common sight on road trips around the country.
Land Rover LR3 -- The stylish and capable Land Rover LR3 is equally appropriate for a night on the town or a week in the desert. For a road trip that promises to involve aspects of both, Land Rover's middle child is uniquely qualified, thanks to a list of features that range from the sophisticated dial-a-surface Terrain Response system to three sunroofs.
Ford Edge -- Ford's all-new crossover SUV delivers sedan-like quiet and comfort but with a roomier backseat and a more versatile cargo area. Attractive exterior styling provides parking-lot panache, while an available panoramic sunroof lets even backseat passengers while away the miles finding faces in the clouds.
MINI Cooper -- Even though the redesigned 2007 MINI Cooper is both larger and more powerful than its predecessor, highway fuel economy has actually increased from 35 to 40 mpg. Combined with a newly improved highway ride, the latest MINI Cooper makes a pleasant companion on straight stretches, in twisty canyons and at thieving gas pumps.
Mazda MX-5 Hardtop Convertible -- The newest MX-5 takes the classic roadster formula and, at the push of a button, adds the comfort and security of a coupe. Compared with the MX-5's traditional cloth top, the new-for-2007 power retractable hardtop adds fewer than 100 pounds and folds away with no impact on trunk space. Highway fuel economy of 30 mpg only adds to the appeal.

The second annual In The Driver's Seat Road Rage Survey, commissioned by AutoVantage, a leading national auto club, found that the least courteous city in the country is Miami, followed by New York and Boston. It's the second consecutive year that Miami claimed the top spot. The other two cities with the worst road rage were Los Angeles and Washington, D.C.
The most courteous city is Portland, Ore., followed closely by Pittsburgh, Seattle/Tacoma, St. Louis and Dallas/Ft. Worth.
The In The Driver's Seat 2007 AutoVantage Road Rage Survey, released today, was conducted to determine the driving habits and attitudes of commuters across the U.S. and to learn more about consumer views on the topic of road rage.
"Road rage has unfortunately too often become a way of life, both on and off the track," said NASCAR racing TV personality, radio host, best-selling author and AutoVantage spokesperson Liz Allison. "More and more, in cities across America, people are acting out their frustrations with dangerous results. It's bad for professional and everyday drivers alike.
"Our Road Rage survey shines the light on emerging driving trends, and there are some very interesting results."
The survey's best and worst cities are:
Least Courteous Cities (Worst Road Rage):
2007 2006
1. Miami 1. Miami
2. New York 2. Phoenix
3. Boston 3. New York
4. Los Angeles 4. Los Angeles
5. Washington, D.C 5. Boston
Most Courteous Cities (Least Road Rage):
2007 2006
1. Portland, Ore. 1. Minneapolis
2. Pittsburgh 2. Nashville
3. Seattle/Tacoma 3. St. Louis
4. St. Louis 4. Seattle
5. Dallas/Ft. Worth 5. Atlanta
Other cities surveyed include Phoenix; Chicago; Sacramento, Calif.; Philadelphia; San Francisco; Houston; Atlanta; Detroit; Minneapolis/St. Paul; Baltimore; Tampa, Fla.; San Diego; Cincinnati; Cleveland and Denver.
"This new study focuses on important attitudes and habits of drivers on the open road nationwide," said Mike Wain, vice president of AutoVantage. "This groundbreaking research is an important tool to help educate and influence safer driving habits throughout the United States."
Want to know how you rate? Check your road rage temperature by taking our online survey at www.gaugemyrage.com
This year's survey sought to define road rage in America. Two important attributes emerged in defining road rage behavior:
-- Angry or upset drivers, including out-of-control drivers and drivers who lose their temper.
-- Bad or aggressive driving, including bad/careless/crazy and/or rude driving, cutting into lanes, cutting people off, tailgating, speeding and/or honking.
When asked the major causes of road rage in the survey, the most frequent theme was people being in a hurry, running late, being impatient and/or speeding.
-- "Bad/rude/careless driving, such as cutting others off, talking on thecell phone, speeding or going too slow in the fast lane"
-- "People who are angry, stressed or frustrated"
-- "People being in a hurry, impatient or running late"
Behaviors by other drivers that cause stress for commuters, and which can lead to road rage, include:
-- Driving too fast (66 percent observe this happening every day)
-- Tailgating (57 percent see this every day)
-- Cutting over without notice (45 percent see this every day)
Commuters also reported that other drivers frequently:
-- Talk on their cell phones (98 percent observe this at least once a week)
-- Do other tasks while driving (63 percent observe this at least once a week)
-- Run red lights (63 percent observe this at least once a week)
-- Slam on the brakes (63 percent see this happening at least once a week)
As a reaction to rude or bad driving by others, people surveyed admitted that they:
-- Honk their horn at the offending driver (35 percent)
-- Curse at the other driver (29 percent)
-- Wave their fist or arms (10 percent)
-- Make an obscene gesture (8 percent)
-- Call the police to report the driver (6 percent)
-- Slam into the car in front of them (1 percent)
Drivers weighed in on how to reduce rude driving and road rage:
-- Increase police presence (62 percent thought this would help)
-- Limit cell phone usage (55 percent)
-- Make it illegal to use cell phones while driving (53 percent)
-- Use automatic cameras to catch bad drivers (51 percent)
-- Conduct a major public awareness campaign (32 percent)
Other key findings of the study:
-- Younger drivers and those who have the longest commutes are most likely to react to an aggressive or rude driver.
-- There is no real difference between men and women when it comes to road rage.
-- Besides talking on the cell phone while driving (61 percent admit to this), the one thing that drivers in this survey were most likely to have done is drive too fast (59 percent). Most drivers admit to doing these at least some of the time.
-- Cutting over without notice. Drivers in New York are the most likely to witness this daily (63 percent), up from 45 percent in 2006. Drivers in Cleveland are least likely to see this (25 percent), down from 45 percent in 2006.
-- Tailgating. Drivers in Phoenix are most likely to see this behavio daily (69 percent), up from 51 percent in 2006. Drivers in Portland are the least like to see tailgating (41 percent).
-- Slamming on the brakes. Drivers in Miami (39 percent) are most likely to witness this behavior daily, up from 23 percent, while drivers i Cleveland and Cincinnati are least likely (14 percent).
-- Running red lights. More than one-fourth (27 percent) said they see drivers every day who run red lights. Drivers in Miami are the most likely to witness this behavior (58 percent), up significantly from 40 percent, and drivers in Cleveland are least likely (14 percent), up slightly from 11 percent in 2006.
-- Driving too fast. Nearly two-thirds say they see drivers driving a lot faster than is safe for road conditions, up significantly from 57 percent last year. Drivers in Sacramento are more likely to see drivers driving too fast (81 percent) than those in Minneapolis/St. Paul (55 percent).
-- Talking on cell phone. Ninety percent say they see drivers talking on their cell phone every day, up from 83 percent in 2006. A full 96 percent of San Francisco drivers said they see this behavior daily, while drivers in Denver are less likely (82 percent).
Overall, more than one third, or 35 percent, said they see drivers doing other things like putting on makeup, shaving or reading while driving. Miami (54 percent) emerged as the city where this is most likely to be seen, while Seattle (19 percent) emerged as the place where this behavior is least likely to happen.

All telephone calls were conducted between Jan. 16 and March 23, 2007, during which period, a total of 2,521 interviews, lasting an average of six to eight minutes, were completed. No incentive was offered and the sponsor of the research was not revealed. The margin of error is +/- 2 percent.

Toyota's "Green" Prius and Lexus IS Tie to Lead J.D. Power and Associates' Customer Satisfaction Rankings
What Car? Report: Lexus Ranks Highest in Overall Customer Satisfaction for a Seventh Consecutive Year
For the first time, a hybrid car, the Toyota Prius, is the highest-ranking model in satisfying new-car owners, according to the J.D. Power and Associates/What Car? magazine 2007 UK Car Customer Satisfaction Index (CSI) StudySM released today. The Toyota Prius ties with the Lexus IS for the top ranking among models included in the study.
Following the Toyota Prius and Lexus IS, the top 10 model rankings are dominated by Japanese models from Toyota, Honda and Lexus, although Škoda makes an excellent showing with the Škoda Octavia and Škoda Fabia ranking fifth and seventh overall.
Highlighting the growing focus on environmentally friendly cars, the Toyota Prius receives 868 index points on a 1,000 point scale and earns particularly high ratings in ownership costs. Toyota Prius owners are most satisfied with day-to-day operating costs and also report high satisfaction for vehicle quality, vehicle appeal and dealer service.
“The Toyota Prius clearly demonstrates that car owners think green is good,” said Steve Fowler, editor of What Car? magazine. “We know that there’s an increase in consumer interest in environmentally friendly cars here in the UK, and with the Toyota Prius topping the model rankings in the 2007 study, we may be seeing a trend emerging in people’s thinking about these vehicles.”
In the nameplate rankings, luxury Japanese brand Lexus ranks highest for a seventh consecutive year, receiving a customer satisfaction score of 862 index points. Lexus continues to receive particularly high ratings in three of the four key measures: quality/reliability, service satisfaction and vehicle appeal. Following Lexus in the rankings are Honda and Škoda in a tie at 845 points, Toyota (832) and Daihatsu (824).
Mercedes-Benz is the most improved nameplate in 2007, increasing 12 points from 2006. Other notable improvements include Citroën, MG Rover and Land Rover.
“Mercedes-Benz has made impressive strides over the past two years, with major improvements in vehicle quality and dealer service making a strong impact on satisfaction with the overall ownership experience,” said Frank Parisi, director of European automotive research at J.D. Power and Associates. “It is also particularly notable to see a hybrid car perform so well, and that the increasing popularity amongst UK consumers for the green credentials of this car seems to be matched by levels of ownership satisfaction.”
The 2007 UK Car Customer Satisfaction Index (CSI) Study is based on the evaluations of more than 18,000 UK car owners after an average of two years of ownership. The study includes 33 brands and 113 models. Owners provide detailed evaluations of their vehicles and dealers, which covers 77 attributes grouped in four measurements of satisfaction. In order of importance, they are:
* Quality and reliability (30%)
* Vehicle appeal (28%), which includes performance, design, comfort and features
* Dealer service satisfaction (22%)
* Ownership costs (19%), which includes fuel consumption, insurance and costs of service/repair
J.D. Power and Associates conducts CSI studies around the world, including Europe (France, Germany, United Kingdom); North America (Canada, Mexico, United States); Asia Pacific (China, India, Indonesia, Japan, Malaysia, New Zealand, Philippines, Taiwan, Thailand); and Africa (South Africa).
The annual J.D. Power and Associates/What Car? study is designed to help manufacturers provide high levels of satisfaction to their customers, and gives consumers access to reliable and accurate information about many different vehicle models. More comprehensive study results are published exclusively in the July issue of What Car? on sale Thursday, 10 May, 2007.

ReviewCars.com Announces 2007 Toyota FJ Cruiser 2007 SUV of the Year
Toyota FJ Cruiser is a surprise winner; Jeep and Honda also score well

2007 Toyota FJ Cruiser
2007 Toyota FJ Cruiser won the hearts of the owners and enthusiasts. ReviewCars.com announced the winners of Top 10 Trucks and SUVs of the Year, and Toyota FJ Cruiser topped the list.
"FJ Cruiser is a surprise winner," said Edward Choi, President and Publisher of ReviewCars.com. "Given its fashionably quirky retro look, FJ Cruiser should have appealed to only a small group of people. But its significant off-road capabilities and everyday urban utilities brought a wide range of buyers to consider FJ Cruiser," said Choi.
Consumers especially liked FJ Cruiser's stocky body, easy to clean interior, exceptional throttle control, off-road capability and comfortable ride. Over half a million consumers' research and ratings behavior indicated that FJ Cruiser's scores were not only good, but also consistently good compared to other trucks and SUVs.
Jeep and Honda scored high as well, and they have multiple vehicles in the Top 10 list.
2007 Top 10 Trucks and SUVs of the Year are:
1. Toyota FJ Cruiser
2. Jeep Wrangler Unlimited
3. Acura MDX
4. Hyundai Santa Fe
5. Honda CR-V
6. Chevrolet Avalanche
7. Mazda CX-7
8. GMC Acadia
9. Jeep Compass
10. Honda Pilot
Another surprise entry was 2007 Hyundai Santa Fe. The image of Hyundai as a small and cheap car producer seems to be diminishing. Even though the debate over long-term reliability of their cars lingers on, consumers' initial satisfaction and reaction to Santa Fe have been extremely positive.
Consumers submit reviews of their own cars or cars they test drove, and they rank each car on Performance, Exterior, Interior and Overall categories. Reviewers also submit pros and cons of each vehicle, and ReviewCars.com's editors summarize these submissions into top 5 pros and cons.
"Toyota's brand image of building reliable and usable vehicles continues on with FJ Cruiser. Ford is launching several new crossover SUVs, and they look promising," Choi added.

Cars.com Picks Top Cars Priced Above $100,000
While most car buyers might scoff at the notion of spending more than $100,000 on a new car, exotic cars are a rapidly growing segment. According to Cars.com the trend doesn't look to be ending anytime soon; new $100,000-plus entries from Porsche and Aston Martin are on the way, and BMW and Mercedes-Benz are expected to produce new, rarified models.
"With continued growth in the exotic cars category, Cars.com decided to compile a list of the top cars for buyers in the luxury market," said Cars.com editor David Thomas. "The selection process for these cars was fairly straightforward. Cars on the list all have a sticker price between $100,000 and $200,000 and go above and beyond pedestrian luxury cars in terms of style, performance and attitude."
1. Bentley Continental Flying Spur - The two-door Bentley Continental GT broke things open for the British coach builder with its most famous owner -- Paris Hilton -- getting them plenty of free publicity. But it's the four-door Flying Spur that is the epitome of how much exotic luxury you can get for your money -- about $170,000 of your money. Even though Bentley is churning out more Continentals than any other model, they're still hand-built and can be custom ordered, down to the wood grain and leather pigmentation
2. Aston Martin V8 Vantage/Vantage Roadster - The V8 Vantage coupe and convertible are sultry, British and fast. For a mere $110,000, the coupe is a major head-turner that will stand out in a crowd of Porsches and even Ferraris. The Aston has subtle elegance with a ton of performance squeezed out of its V-8 engine.
3. Audi R8 - This new kid on the block is Audi's first take on the semi-exotic sports car. Its modern styling and impressive performance, about on par with the Porsche 911 Turbo, make a value statement at $109,000. The huge grille, mid-engine layout and sporty cockpit scream business; the bold stripe on the side shouts eccentricity.
4. Porsche 911 Turbo - It may look like Porsches of the past, but the new 911 turbo is the highest attainment of Porsche-ness ever built. $122,000 might seem like a major investment, but a 911 Turbo never goes out of style; unless Porsche goes against almost 50 years of tradition, a 911 will look like a 911 for decades to come. Even if the next-generation Turbo outdoes this one in performance, passers-by will never know.
5. Bentley Continental GTC - The GTC's motorized canvas roof might seem like something from your grandpa's old Buick, but it's the look with the top down that seals the deal. If you think an average convertible is an impractical buy, what does that say about this one, at $189,990? How, then, did it make the list? You just can't have too many Bentleys in your stable.
6. Ferrari F430 - Yes, you too can own Ferrari's "entry-level" F430 for under $200,000. It'll probably hold its value -- it starts at $168,005 -- better than most of the cars on this list, and some say this might be the easiest Ferrari ever to drive like a pro. You can't put a price tag on that.
7. Mercedes-Benz S600 - This one almost didn't make the list, but we've seen too many of this $139,900 sedan on the streets and parked in front of fancy restaurants to let it slip out of the top 10. Plus, it has a powerful V-12 engine and a very upscale cabin, complete with mood lighting. That's why it comes in at No. 7, even if it looks like its less-stellar S550 sibling.
8. BMW M6 Convertible - Its style might not be for everyone, but the M6 convertible hits 60 mph in just 4.6 seconds. That means it'll only take a minute to dry your hair after you leave the beach. Of course, we wouldn't recommend tracking sand in a new, $104,900, V-10-powered BMW, unless your detailer is on speed dial. This is probably the least attractive car on the list, but we've run into more than one luxury owner who covets the 6 Series above all else. Loyalty -- and the engine -- put it in at No. 8.
9. Lamborghini Gallardo - Lamborghinis are brutish and powerful, and they look like nothing else. At $175,000 for the hardtop and $195,000 for the roadster, the Gallardo stretches the $200,000 budget. They're native Italians, but are most often seen in high-profile areas like South Beach and Hollywood. As those areas suggest, it's all about the looks; the cabin is sparse, the ride is harsh and the exhaust is more than boastful. Good thing it has the performance credibility, or it would be all show.
10. Maserati Quattroporte - The Quattroporte holds the No. 10 spot on the list because it was one of the first near-$100,000 cars to really sell in significant quantities, leading other automakers to believe they could get away with attaching six-figure price tags to fancy cars. It's still one of the most inexpensive Italian exotic cars you can buy, at $110,600, and this year it sports a traditional automatic transmission. Plus, you can feel like one of the guys from "Entourage."

Lincoln MKZ, Buick Lucerne, and Saab 9-5 achieve 'Very Good' overall scores
Three of the six upscale sedans tested for the June issue of Consumer Reports, the Infiniti G35, Lexus ES350, and Nissan Maxima, posted "Excellent" overall ratings. It's rare for so many cars to be scored so highly in a monthly test group.
The top-scoring and sporty Infiniti G35 now ranks as the best car tested by Consumer Reports in the Upscale Sedan category, outpointing the previously- tested Acura TL. The quiet and comfortable Lexus E350 came in very close behind the Infiniti G35. The Nissan Maxima rated somewhat lower overall, though still achieving an Excellent overall road test score.
The test group brought together a total of six very different sedans in the $30,000 to $40,000 range, with varying blends of sportiness and opulence. The more posh models tend to be quieter, have more interior space and ride more smoothly. Sporty models usually have less room inside, ride firmly and handle more nimbly.
The three other vehicles rounding out the group, the Lincoln MKZ, Buick Lucerne, and Saab 9-5, all achieved "Very Good" overall ratings. The Lincoln MKZ was previously called the Lincoln Zephyr.
Testing for this group of vehicles was completed earlier this year so that the overall ratings could be included in Consumer Reports' Annual April Auto Issue. The Infiniti G35 was named as CR's Top Pick in the Upscale Sedans classification for 2007 in that issue. Its stable mate, the bigger and more luxurious Infiniti M35, is a Top Pick in the Luxury Sedan category.
"The Infiniti G35 is quick, agile, and sporty," said David Champion, senior director of Consumer Reports Auto Test Center in East Haddam, Connecticut. "It's a driver's car that is pleasantly refined and rides comfortably. But both the cockpit and rear seat are snug and the trunk is small."
Tests and ratings for these six near-premium level cars appear in the June issue of Consumer Reports, which goes on sale May 8.
Notably, Consumer Reports recommends all six of the vehicles in this test group. Consumer Reports only recommends vehicles that have performed well in its tests, have at least average predicted reliability based on CR's Annual Car Reliability Survey of its own subscribers, and performed at least adequately if crash-tested or included in a government rollover test. (This is the first time in years that all of the vehicles in a monthly test group have had at least average predicted reliability.)
The Infiniti G35 was extensively updated for 2007. Consumer Reports tested both rear-wheel, and all-wheel-drive versions of the sedan as part of this test group. The all-wheel-drive Infiniti G35X is just as good with a slight loss in fuel economy and a $2,000 higher sticker price-$39,400 Manufacturer's Suggested Retail Price as tested. The G35 is nimble in routine handling. On the track, the Infiniti G35 handled like a sports car with high and predictable cornering limits. The 306-hp, 3.5-liter V6 engine is smooth and refined, with stronger performance than some V8s. The rear-wheel-drive version achieved 19 mpg overall on premium fuel in CR's fuel economy tests, one mpg better than the AWD model. The five-speed automatic transmission is responsive and downshifts quickly. Braking performance is excellent, with short, controlled stops.
With a very comfortable ride, quiet interior, and lavish amenities, the Lexus ES provides a big luxury car feel and refinement in a trimmer package. It is quick yet relatively fuel efficient. Agility is not a strong suit, and the Lexus ES is not even remotely fun to drive. The Lexus ES350 ($41,289 MSRP as tested) is equipped with a 272-hp, 3.5-liter V6 engine that is smooth and responsive. It delivers both quick acceleration and a good 23 mpg overall on premium fuel. The smooth and refined six-speed automatic transmission optimizes throttle response and economy by keeping engine speed down while cruising. The brakes perform very well, with short, well-controlled stops.
The freshened Nissan Maxima has a roomy interior, logical controls, and quick acceleration. However, the ride is ordinary, handling is not agile, and the turning circle is wide. In some ways, the less expensive Nissan Altima is a better car. The Nissan Maxima 3.5 SL ($33,715 MSRP as tested) is equipped with a 255- hp, 3.5-liter V6 that delivers smooth and strong performance. The continuously variable transmission is extremely smooth and helps improve fuel economy. Stopping distances are very good from 60 mph on dry pavement, but were significantly longer in the wet.
Like its Ford Fusion/Mercury Milan siblings, the Lincoln MKZ is a good car. But the Lincoln does not stand out in the upscale category. A new engine is more powerful without sacrificing fuel economy, and the ride is comfortable and quiet. Overall, the Lincoln MKZ doesn't offer much more substance than the less expensive Ford Fusion or Mercury Milan. Stability control is almost universal in this class, but the Lincoln MKZ does not offer it. The Lincoln MKZ ($32,675 MSRP as tested) comes with a 263-hp, 3.5-liter V6 that is refined and strong. The six-speed automatic transmission shifts smoothly. The brakes perform well.
The Luzerne CXS V8 is a quicker and more refined version of the Lucerne CXL V6 tested by Consumer Reports last August. Its standard stability control, better brakes, improved handling and ride control, and V8 power help it score considerably better than the Luzerne CXL. The Luzerne CXS ($38,935 MSRP as tested) is powered by a 275-hp, 4.6-liter V8 that delivers strong acceleration and is noticeably smoother than the coarse V6 in the less expensive Lucerne CXL. The four-speed transmission is smooth and responsive. Braking distances are reasonably short.
Dating back to 1998, the Saab 9-5 has seen only mild tweaks since then -- the latest in 2006. The aging design was evident in CR's battery of tests, in which the Saab 9-5 fell short of the competition. It is neither sporty nor particularly luxurious and refined. It performs well enough overall, but lacks polish. The Saab 9-5 ($38,635 MSRP as tested) is equipped with a 260-hp, turbocharged, 2.3-liter four-cylinder engine that delivers lively acceleration-though it's not as responsive as that from competing V6 powerplants. The five-speed automatic transmission shifts smoothly but could be more responsive. Braking performance is excellent.

CoVi Technologies Announces First Comprehensive High-Definition Vehicle Surveillance System
HD Video Cameras Coupled with New License Plate Recognition Software Delivers Unparalleled Vehicle Tracking and Identification Capabilities
CoVi Technologies today announced an advanced high-definition vehicle surveillance system for security and law- enforcement professionals specifically designed to help address the continued increase in vehicle-related incidents in the U.S.
Every 26 seconds a motor vehicle is stolen in the U.S. at a cost of more than $7 billion per year(1). In addition, homeland security and organized crime activities have intensified the need to monitor the more than 335,000 vehicles crossing U.S. borders each day(2), as well as to track drivers with potentially malicious intent entering potentially vulnerable private and public sites, including government buildings, power plants and universities.
Combining high-definition (HD) video cameras with advanced license plate recognition and vehicle forensics software, the CoVi solution provides a powerful new tool to monitor and identify vehicles involved in suspicious or criminal activity, and improve vehicle security in a variety of environments.
"Vehicle theft is not only a crime effecting individuals and businesses, it has worldwide consequences. An extreme example of the global ripple effects of this problem is a citing in a recent FBI counter terrorism report that vehicles used in deadly Iraq car bombings were likely stolen from the United States," said Barry Walker, CoVi's president and CEO. "Increasing vehicle surveillance challenges are requiring an entirely new level of technology flexibility, power and sophistication. And, as the stakes get higher the technology is evolving to meet the need. CoVi's HD vehicle surveillance solution provides an order of magnitude better image quality and vehicle identification capabilities compared with conventional systems, and provides a complete, easy-to-use solution to meet even the most stringent security needs and applications."
CoVi's vehicle surveillance solution is the first to include high-quality HD video technology, delivering twice the field of view and significantly sharper image quality than conventional analog surveillance cameras. HD technology enables more flexibility in camera placement and delivers superior video resolution to enhance license plate recognition capabilities. In addition, new CoVi software employs advanced pattern recognition capabilities to automatically identify license plate numbers on moving or stationary vehicles from various angles in the daytime or at night.
The CoVi vehicle surveillance system is ideal for any business or law enforcement agency that manages, monitors or enforces vehicles and traffic, including: border security, university campus environments, valet parking, toll booths, managed parking lots and garages, gas stations, corporate campuses, and city traffic enforcement.
The CoVi vehicle surveillance solution incorporates a database search and alert system, enabling security and law enforcement professionals to search for matching license plate records based on full or partial matches. It also automatically generates alarms and email alerts from user-defined license plate "watch lists", such as a stolen vehicle database, or active Amber Alert. In addition, the system includes robust vehicle forensics capabilities to monitor vehicle activity in parking garages, valet parking areas and fleet vehicle facilities to reduce damage claims and fraud from accidents, provide access verification, and enhance security.
CoVi's vehicle surveillance solution is designed for CoVi's flagship Crystal HD(TM) video surveillance system, the world's only high-definition, distributed IP-based video surveillance system.
Key features of the CoVi vehicle surveillance solution include:
* Superior image clarity -- CoVi's Crystal HD license plate reading cameras capture HD resolution (1280 x 720) video and offer a wide 16:9 aspect ratio, providing up to 12 times higher-quality video resolution than standard definition systems
* Robust plate finding and OCR algorithms -- Enables accurate license plate reading on moving vehicles from various angles; infrared (IR) technology enables reading in poor lighting conditions or at night; advanced OCR algorithms automatically adjust for read errors and obscured letters
* Advanced "Search & Watch Application" (SWAT) -- CoVi's SWAT application enables database license plate searching for close/partial matches, and allows security professions to set up "watch lists" that automatically generate alarms when suspected vehicles are identified
* Robust retrieval and storage -- IP-based system allows security professionals to quickly retrieve surveillance video from cameras anywhere on the network, and can archive up to one million license plate records with associated video
* Flexible -- CoVi's vehicle forensics application allows parking lot security professionals to see up to four vehicle views simultaneously, and features digital video zoom-in capabilities
* Scalable -- The CoVi system easily scales from one sensor/camera to an unlimited number of sensors/cameras
Crystal HD is based on CoVi's Security Camera Area Network (SCAN(TM)) architecture, which encodes and stores video at the IP network edge to provide unparalleled performance and reliability. Crystal HD's unique distributed architecture is a dramatic departure from the legacy centralized CCTV topology, and maximizes quality and functionality while minimizing network usage. Crystal HD integrates cameras, Distributed Media Managers (DMMs) and monitoring and management software to provide unparalleled performance and reliability.

For moms who prefer metal that moves over metal that adorns, stop by the Walter P. Chrysler Museum on Mother's Day weekend for a treat that'll get her motor running. The Museum, in Auburn Hills, will exhibit a newly restored 1955 Dodge La Femme in its original feminine Sapphire White and Heather Rose color scheme Friday through Sunday, May 11 - 13.
Chrysler Corporation introduced the La Femme, a customized Dodge Custom Royal Lancer, as a marketing strategy to appeal to females as the women's automobile market continued to grow. Museum visitors will find the La Femme's feminine exterior not only featured a spectacular paint palette, but also a special gold-colored "La Femme" script on the fenders. The vehicle's interior was graced with special tapestry upholstery bearing pink rosebuds on a pale pink background and pale pink vinyl trim.
A rectangular purse matching the car's interior was a standard La Femme feature, stowed while driving in a special compartment built into the back of the passenger seat. Each purse came complete with matching compact lipstick and cigarette cases, a lighter and change purse. Also standard was a raincoat, rain bonnet and umbrella in the rosebud pattern that was stored in a compartment behind the driver's seat.
Approximately 2,500 Dodge La Femmes were produced during the 1955 and 1956 model years.
The Walter P. Chrysler Museum highlights more than 65 antique, custom and concept vehicles spanning a century. The Museum's three floors of vehicles, interspersed with interactive displays and exhibits, tells the story of the Chrysler Corporation and its contributions to automotive design, technology and innovation, as well as the automobile's impact on American culture. A theater featuring three continuously running short movies and a Museum Store, stocked with exclusive and hard-to-find collectibles, rounds out the Museum's offerings.

Did you know that children are more sensitive to the effects of air pollution than adults?
And, did you know the air quality inside a car when you are driving them to school or soccer practice with the windows rolled up is worse than the air outside, especially in heavy traffic?
"To ensure that the air entering the passenger compartment through your vehicle's heating, air conditioning and vent system is uncontaminated, your vehicle's cabin air filter must be clean and functioning well," says Ramon C. Nunez, Director of Filtration for Robert Bosch, LLC, supplier of automotive parts and systems to vehicle manufacturers and the aftermarket here in the United States and abroad.
Roadside air - especially along busy roads and highways - contains pollen, dust, soot and smog whose harmful effects are well-documented. Much like the filter in your home's heating system, your vehicle's cabin air filter traps the dust, dirt and grime from the road and pumps clean air into the passenger compartment.
However, over time, like any other filter in your car or home, it can get clogged and actually multiply the dangers associated with these pollutants when the vehicle's heating and air conditioning system blows them into the closed interior with no avenue for escape.
According to the American Lung Association's 2006 State of the Air Report, children are more likely to suffer from the effects of air pollution than adults because their lungs are still growing and because their bodies' ability to fight off infections is still developing.
Bosch's Nunez recommends you change your vehicle's cabin filter annually or every 12 to 15,000 miles or more often if you live in an area with higher pollution levels.
Bosch manufactures two types of automotive cabin filters - particulate cabin filters which, screen out road dust, bacteria, mold spores, pollens and other pollutants and activated charcoal filters which, also absorb harmful gases and odors. Like the home furnace filter, the automotive cabin filter features a pleated design which provides greater surface area for higher filtration capacity. The more the pleats the greater the capacity for filtration. Most vehicles, 2001 and newer, are equipped with cabin air filters.
